Family spy club review: Martinhal lisbon oriente & martinhal sagres, Portugal
First and foremost, I would like to convey the feeling we’ve come away with as a family having just returned from a ten day trip with Martinhal. That feeling is: rested - and the fact that we’ve had an ACTUAL holiday - with children.

The end of the summer holidays and return to school, sparks many school drop off discussions with parents about what they got up to - an array of different trips from camping, to Airbnb stays, to all inclusive package getaways. A common theme from many of these travel stories, was the sense that despite me being told they had a great time - it more often than not came with a caveat; that it was hard work with the kids because of…(insert an array of reasons such as stone floors, no stair gates, thin walls, no A/C, lack of children's activities, sense of guilt for wanting to just lye and read a book and relax, having to plan all meals, little help from in laws who came along for the holiday) and the list could go on.
As we head towards October half term and our thoughts turn to our next holiday plans, we wanted to share our thoughts on Martinhal and chat to founder and travel expert Chitra Stern about how and why Martinhal began, and why it makes the perfect family getaway.

Staying at Martinhal feels incredibly unique and very much tailored to the nuances of family life! How did you go about mapping out the Martinhal guest experience and do you feel being a mother yourself influenced an integral part of its creation?
Chitra Stern: Yes, we started to develop the business idea at the same time we started a family. Having our first child made us realise that sophisticated places were not welcoming children and child-friendly places didn’t offer the quality that we were used to. So we found a new niche in the luxury hospitality market and created a unique concept. Having four children before we opened our first resort in Sagres and living on site certainly helped us to develop the concept and details further!
What in your opinion, sets Martinhal apart from other family holidays?
Chitra Stern: The family-friendly ethos and details, offering a truly exclusive experience to each family member resulting in happy adults AND children at the end of their holiday. No one feels that they’ve had to compromise on the quality of the experience. Being not only child-friendly, but also parent-friendly, considering all that’s needed for a luxury holiday for the whole family without compromising on design, elegance, and quality is what sets us apart.
So what makes a good family holiday?
This is pretty subjective and there are so many factors at play, including children's ages (and how many of them you’ll be in charge of!) personalities, whether they are neurodiverse or having additional needs, individual specific likes and dislikes and the parents or caregivers sense of what they find relaxing and enjoyable. There is no one size fits all, but for us, flexibility is key and above all, EASE. We have two
children aged six and fourteen months, work incredibly hard in our day to day lives and jobs, so anything for an easy life, happy children, minimum fuss and effort is a huge win for us. Above all we also needed some time to ourselves, as much as we adore our children, spending time with each other too on holiday was very important.
Why Martinhal?
Martinhal was founded on the parents-matter-too principle of “Enjoy your cappuccino with the foam still on top”. This resonated. With our girls the ages they are, one of us is always running off after our smallest, eyes to the ground and surveying for danger while the other plays with and entertains our six year old while she discusses the ins and outs of just about everything in life. (Her latest interest is Snowshoe Hares and the Tundra…I’ll say no more…).
Martinhal currently has four destinations in Portugal, two in Lisbon; Martinhal Chiado in the centre and the newest addition, Martinhal Lisbon Oriente - as well as two in the Algarve - Martinhal Sagres and Martinhal Quinta Do Lago. We were fortunate enough to spend three nights at Lisbon Oriente which opened its doors in June 2023, as well as a five night visit to Martinhal Sagres.
When speaking to some other guests during our visit, there was a common theme of families wanting to return year after year. Why do you think Martinhal attracts this level of guest loyalty?
Chitra Stern: Loyalty is thanks to the excellent service and staff, combined with the amazing facilities. I think guests came back because we ensure hassle-free luxury family holidays and guests know they will feel the whole family has had a restful holiday with beautiful memories for all ages. At Martinhal, guests can enjoy time as a family, time as a couple, as well as “me time” achieving the right balance so each family member feels they have had the holiday they sought.
Martinhal Lisbon Oriente
Based fifteen minutes outside of Lisbon's centre, the newest addition to the Martinhal family is the grand and glamorous Lisbon Oriente, situated in The Parque das Nações (Park of Nations). This area is perfect for families - unlike Lisbon centre, which is beautiful but very hilly and cobbly so not as suitable for buggies and small legs, The Park of Nations offers a number of attractions within easy walking distance, including some beautiful gardens and parks, The Vasco da Gama Shopping Centre, Lisbon Oceanarium, The Pavillion of Knowledge science centre and the cities Telecabine Cable Car. We rode this as a return journey for around €25 Euro and it offered a super fun ride for the children and spectacular views over Lisbon and the Tagus River.
Lisbon Oriente is ideal for those looking for a city break with their family - whether that be a work trip or for pleasure. From a corporate perspective - Oriente is brilliantly set up, with a business suite consisting of meeting rooms and private call booths. It boasts an expertly staffed kids club to entertain the little ones, as well as a brand new gym and indoor and outdoor pools for leisure. Our two bedroom apartment was five star, fully equipped with everything you may need for your family and with the option to self cater, it provided us with great flexibility during our stay.
The Terrace Restaurant - Martinhal Lisbon Oriente Review
During our stay, the Martinhal team were thoughtful and attentive and always on hand - we were fully supported by the on site concierge who helped arrange everything from high chairs through to airport transfers and car hire. What was so wonderful was the sense that despite it being an incredibly smart, five star hotel, the children were never once frowned at for being loud, or dripping their swimming costumes in the lift on the way back from the pool! The atmosphere was accommodating and welcoming and it allowed us to fully enjoy everything the accommodation had to offer.
Lisbon Oriente is set within a green oasis, high walled garden which is hidden from the from the front facade. The Terrace restaurant, serving up exquisite, locally sourced food, is on the same level as the garden, meaning the children could run around outside safely while we ate and we could also enjoy drinks on the outdoor patio. Childcare is also available during your meals by pre-arrangement.
During our stay we noticed that technology played a crucial role in the guest experience - with the use of the MyMartinhal.com website. How has using this transformed the way guests are able enjoy their stay at Martinhal? How do you balance this with the more traditional face to face hospitality dynamic?
Chitra Stern: We have worked hard on My Martinhal to ensure that guests can access what is going on across the resort as we have so many different activities for the different age groups and for parents. In addition, there are different dining options and even themed dining events. My Martinhal enables guests to get information about all services available, check availability and make bookings quickly. Guests have become more convenience oriented and want to have the information at their fingertips from anywhere in the resort. However this will never replace the face to face and personal relationships with guests. Guests really create great relationships with our staff during their stay that make a difference.
Childcare
Special Touches - Gift in our babys cot when we arrived at Lisbon Oriente
My husband and I utilised the kids club facilities one afternoon (both of our daughters stayed together which was nice for their first session). I instantly felt at ease despite never having left the children with people I didn’t know - we found the team professional, kind, compassionate and reassuring and activities were tailored for both ages. My older daughter had so much fun that she didn’t want to leave.
These precious few hours meant we had the opportunity to head into Lisbon centre - we took E-Scooters along the river which was a fun way to explore and cost around €12 Euro with the Lime app, taking around 35 minutes. We visited the Time Out Food Market which was fantastic for food and drink and a fun atmosphere - I wouldn’t have said it's suitable for children owing to the noise and crowds (and toilet set up!) it would have been hard not to lose them! But for adults looking for a meal and night out it was great fun. We returned to Oriente via taxi which took under ten minutes.
Property Ownership
Martinhal Oriente was constructed during the ‘Golden Visa’ period, which is now coming to an end - but all apartments and villas are available to buy - meaning you can own some prime, expertly managed real estate with all of the benefits of a stay at Martinhal. This opportunity, alongside the newly opened Martinhal International School mean that if you’re considering a relocation to Lisbon it is a fantastic set up to transition your family. I must admit we were very tempted! Lisbon is brimming with culture, art and energy so it’s certainly worth exploring if you’re keen on a European move.
The opportunity of property ownership feels to be an important part of the Martinhal offering. How can families benefit from owning a Martinhal property?
Chitra Stern: It works differently according to each resort but we offer guaranteed return investment opportunities where owners can use the property for shorter periods in the year, if that is what they want, as well as residential options at Martinhal Oriente where people choose to live in branded residences with all the services.
Tell us a bit more about the Martinhal International School in Lisbon? How did the idea come about and do you think there will be further development in the education space?
Chitra Stern: I’ve been part of a government-led task force to attract foreign direct investment and during that process, I brought up the need for a quality international school within central Lisbon, in order to compete with other worldwide destinations. Education is crucial for families when deciding where to live or relocate to and Lisbon didn’t have enough International Schools to attract companies and families to reach their foreign direct investment goals. At the same time, we have identified an opportunity to breathe new life into a former educational facility still with its original art deco façade in Park of Nations, and though it was the perfect location for our United Lisbon International School, right next to Lisbon’s most modern neighbourhood.
Through extensive research selecting the right global industry partners, as well as having a large family of our own, my husband and I were able to apply our first-hand knowledge of the importance of education for international families relocating to a major capital city like Lisbon.
The school’s extensive state-of-the-art offering and facilities were completed and opened for operations in September 2020. It was the start of the transformative community that is Edu Hub Lisbon. Watch this space!
How has the recent economic climate affected Martinhal, if at all, when it comes to family holidays and those looking to move abroad?
Chitra Stern: For many years now, foreigners have been moving to Portugal for different reasons over the years. Portugal has a temperate climate which appeals to many northern Europeans. Safety and security issues have also played a role as people have migrated from cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to Lisbon. Lisbon features high on the Global Peace Index, making it one of the most attractive places to live. Geopolitics all over the world dictate that people want to find safer and stable places to live. People want to feel welcome where they move to and Portugal has a very open, tolerant and liberal society.
The recent economic climate post-COVID has been rocky all over the world. Portugal’s economic data have been quite good compared to other countries although there is a housing crisis here like in other countries.
Tourists feeling the crunch of the economic situation at home have started coming in other seasons other than summer to enjoy an early summer, an extension of their summer or winter sun as well. Flights tend to be cheaper outside of August as well, so it makes sense.
Martinhal Sagres
The second part of our trip took us South to Martinhal Sagres, the southernmost point of Europe in Portugal's Algarve region. Nestled on the picturesque cliffs of Portugal's Algarve coast, Martinhal Sagres Beach Resort is a true gem that seamlessly blends luxury, family-friendliness, and natural beauty.
What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in guest expectations and demand over the past thirteen years since opening your flagship resort, Martinhal Sagres?
Chitra Stern: Well, the world has changed a lot, as have guests’ expectations. People want to feel the places they visit and the brands they use are aligned with their life philosophy. Sustainability and authenticity as well as exclusivity have become more important. Guests want to keep going back to hotel brands they truly love and I believe Martinhal is a “love brand”. We have also had to invest a lot in IT hardware and software over the years as families have multiple devices and need much more bandwidth as devices are used for entertainment, social media, business and communications. More guests are “working from anywhere” as well.
Accommodation
Martinhal Sagres offers a variety of accommodation options, from luxury hotel rooms to spacious villas. We stayed in one of the two bedroom Ocean Villas, which I’d say are probably the best location (easily accessible from the children's clubs, village square play area and pools - little legs in our family are not keen on walking far!) all whilst offering breathtaking views of the beach and sea. The rooms were both downstairs with an open plan living room, kitchen and terrace upstairs. This meant you could really enjoy the views in the mornings and evenings as the sun set. We found it to be clean and well-appointed, fully air conditioned and with all the amenities you'd expect from a luxury resort. In comparison to Oriente, it felt more of a beachside holiday home than a hotel apartment which was apt for the location and feeling of relaxation. The towel and bedding test were passed with flying colours - super soft and luxurious!
What is Martinhals approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility now and for the future?
Chitra Stern: Sustainability and environment have been on our priorities since the beginning and when building the projects. We have solar and photovoltaic panels, have worked on water desalination system in Sagres to be able to use it to water our gardens, that have been carefully planned with indigenous plants, hence resulting in the gardens having less water needs. Martinhal Sagres has been awarded the Green Key award for its environmental-friendly procedures and processes. There are a number of activities for recycling, single use plastic reduction, laundry policies as well as beach cleaning and local charity support. Martinhal Sagres specially has shown a great impact on the local community by creating jobs and bringing business to local commerce and activity partners.
The newly-built Martinhal Oriente stands as a visually stunning testament to the art of sustainable luxury architecture. Its design narrative revolves around the interplay between opulence and ecological consciousness, highlighting a commitment to responsible urban development. Within this architectural marvel lies a profound respect for nature, evident in its lush green façade with Portuguese olive trees gracing each balcony. Inside, biophilic design thrives, increasing guests’ connectivity to nature through direct and indirect natural elements and Portuguese plants, fostering an atmosphere of tranquillity and wellness. Deepening its commitment to water conservation, a meticulously designed central drip irrigation system waters the plants, sparing precious water resources.

Service
The staff at Martinhal Sagres truly shine and we couldn’t fault the service. They are not only courteous and attentive but also genuinely warm and welcoming. On our second from last night our baby daughter was very sick in the night (that feeling of doom sets in as you think about having to travel home!) and at 1am we realised we had no bottled water. One call to the concierge and within 5 minutes one of the team came to the door with bottles of water, fresh towels and sheets. We also got a courtesy call the next day to check on her to see if she needed to see the on site medical team (thankfully she was absolutely fine!) This service was just excellent and made us feel truly looked after.
The Martinhal team were all incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and thoughtful throughout our trip, both at Lisbon Oriente and in Sagres. How do you maintain this seamless level of service and brand consistency throughout all sites?
Chitra Stern: We have a strong company culture that has been built organically over the years. We invest a lot in the recruitment and training processes. There are several internal marketing with communication efforts, obviously. Employee loyalty is something we’ve worked hard on since the beginning and we have created a strong Martinhal family recruited and retained with our brand values in mind.
One thing parents do worry about when away is medical facilities and the nearest hospital - so for the worriers out there who like to cover all bases (us!) there is a nurse on site who is always around for immediate medical first aid. Vila do Bispo is 10 Minutes from Sagres and can provide an ambulance and the nearest public hospital is in Lagos (30 min drive) in addition to Alvor (40 minutes drive).
Family-Friendly
The "Raposa Kids Club" with it’s iconic fox mascot offers an array of age-appropriate clubs and schedule of activities for children throughout the week. When we arrived we were gifted very sweet little fox toys for the girls, sun hats, a backpack and Martinhal bottle which the children loved. Due to the size and the capacity of the Sagres resort, our girls were in two different clubs but this meant my 6 year old came away having met some lovely new friends to play with, all her age.
The baby club takes infants from 6 months old, which is much younger than many other holiday providers and for this fact alone I’d say that if you have babies under twelve months or just above, you can confidently leave them in great hands and enjoy some time to yourself. They had very very charming little baby outings each day around the resort in six seater buggies, it was great they weren’t just indoors the entire session and just felt more enriching (which alleviated any parent guilt for having them in clubs!) The older children's clubs also organised a huge variety of outdoor activities including swimming sessions throughout the week to keep things varied and entertaining.
The playgrounds, four swimming pools, and secluded beach access all contribute to the family-friendly atmosphere and it's all within such easy reach so great to mix up the holiday each day. All restaurants were near play areas so the children could entertain themselves, within view, whilst adults finished their meal.
Can you share any notable family stories or memorable moments since Martinhal began?
Chitra Stern: Oh! We have had so many! We have worked hard on celebrating family events at Martinhal – for example my parents-in-law’s milestone birthdays, or my parents 50th wedding anniversary, our own milestone birthdays, our children’s birthdays. These events have brought together family and friends from all over the world sometimes and we have created wonderful memories. These celebrations are so important, especially since COVID. During COVID, we held onto some of these memories and moments while we longed to see each other again.
We also make it a point to celebrate each opening with an inauguration party. It is important for the stakeholders as well as us as founders and CEOs.
Portugal is clearly close to your heart and In 2019 you delivered a TEDX talk about why Portugal is Trending. Do you foresee Martinhal expanding into other countries at some point in the future? Finally, what is your vision and plans for the future of Martinhal?
Chitra Stern: Yes, I do foresee Martinhal expanding to other countries. It is in fact a responsibility to do so as many guests have asked when we are going to open in the rest of Europe and in the USA!
Food and Drink
Martinhal Sagres offers three main restaurants, O Terraço, with its panoramic ocean views, serving more traditional Portuguese cuisine, while As Dunas Beach Bar and Restaurant which specialises in seafood just steps from the beach. It offered daily catch specials to choose from and was our personal favourite of the three! Os Gambozinos is located in the village square (a bit of an epicentre for the exodus post-kids club!) and this offered the genius of a children's buffet, at a perfect, edible temperature (read: no hangry children or frantic blowing on the food to cool it down, so they could eat immediately.) Within the village there was also the more laid back option of the Josper grill - and poolside you could also grab a bite.
Most mornings we ate at O Terraço which offered a huge and diverse breakfast buffet, with a wide selection of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Prosecco was also unlimited should you be so inclined on a morning!
Let’s talk food! How does Martinhal cater for all family members during their stay? (both adventurous and perhaps not so adventurous!) This is often such a big sticking point when families decide to embark on a trip away!
Chitra Srern: Gastronomy is key for Martinhal, good quality and wide range of options for various needs and tastes are part of the Martinhal experience. Based on fresh and seasonal ingredients, we offer a variety of food options through our restaurant concepts. Our menus include vegetarian and vegan options and pay high attention to dietary restrictions (allergies and intolerances). Our restaurants not only offer childrens menus but also fresh purees for babies from 6 months of age. As for drinks, Martinhal invites guests to discover the very best of Portuguese wines as well as some signature mocktails and cocktails.
Activities
Whether you're an adventure enthusiast or looking to unwind, Martinhal Sagres has you covered. The resort offers a range of activities, from water sports and tennis to yoga and spa treatments. The Martinhal Surf School is perfect for those looking to catch some waves, and the nearby nature reserves provide ample opportunities for hiking and exploring the Algarve's natural beauty.

Ocado Baby Christmas Gifts -family spy club review
Well Halloween is officially over and Christmas is very much next up on the agenda. My five year old has of course discussed Christmas since her birthday in June, and Halloween had simply bought me a little more time. The present requests are now in full swing and despite wishing I was one of those people who (I am SO envious of) had the foresight to buy Christmas decorations and gifts whilst they were on sale in January – that was of course an utter pipe dream. Next year I vow (again) to be that person.
This year we welcome a new addition to the family. My second daughter was born in July and as promised by other parents with more than one child, you do become savvier the second time around. Read: Frugal.
Sadly though, I also find it comes with a certain slap dash approach of ‘Nooo they don’t need that / Oh I did that last time and it took ages / I’m not going to bother with *insert gift or activity* again. Maybe this is just me… but I’m almost saddened by my own laissez faire attitude with her and now worried the poor girl will miss out on all the things that were cute and exciting (for me mostly) the first time around.
One example of this is, I’ve already been asked by godparents and friends what the baby would like for Christmas. Well the answer up until recently has been: ‘Nothing, as she won’t know either way’. Even writing that feels a bit mean. This coupled with the fact that we have everything we ‘need’ for her from the first time around.
I was delighted when asked by bloss to review some of Ocado’s goodies for the festive period. It meant some gift inspiration for both girls and of course meant I clawed back some semblance of decency with my parenting.
Stocking fillers
I’m a sucker for Christmas themed items and one of the first little treats was a ‘My First Christmas’ Bib from M&S which is super sweet and will definitely bring some Christmas cheer to the dinner table!
My five year old daughter is also in for some fab stocking fillers, with Janet & Allan Ahlbergs classic book “Funny Bones’ in the mix (my husband is in the medical profession so this is an ode to him!) as well as 1001 Encanto Stickers and a Frozen themed memory game.
Rainbow Stacker / Thats Not My Dinosaur Book
My littlest is only four months old but this is the fun time when babies start to really be interested in things, specifically grabbing. I discovered she was at this stage the hard way as she grabbed my bowl of cereal one morning recently and it flew across the room, five minutes before leaving for the school run.
It’s an early Christmas present (that I’ll be wrapping up and re-gifting her as she won’t remember) but the wooden Rainbow Stacker has gone down a storm. I love the fact it has some longevity too over the next 12 months as I understand it’s great for children's motor skills and coordination.
Another sensory treat, and a super gift is the very sweet “That’s Not My Dinosaur' book. We’re such a fan of this touch and feel book series in our house. My eldest daughter loves dinosaurs, so it’s proven to be a really special little book for them to read together.
Calpol Vapour Plug-In
Something that has been useful for both girls during this delightful cough-and-cold season is the Calpol Vapour Plug-In. I’d not actually used these before and simply relied on oral calpol when they were poorly. However, the struggle (especially with a baby who relies on a dummy) is the blocked nose which makes sleep elusive, pretty much non-existent.
The plug-in worked much better than I’d expected and definitely took the edge off congestion for both of them. It lasts around eight hours, so it’s perfect for overnight. Refill tablets are available to buy so it's one to hang on to for the winter months!
Weleda Body Wash & Shampoo / Childs Farm
I’m a bit of a stickler for bathtime in our house. I am quite picky about the products I use for the children and mindful of the ingredients (many products claim to be natural but the extracts are minimal!).
Although Weleda Body Wash & Shampoo doesn’t tick EVERY box, it is one of the more natural products. It’s great for sensitive skin and I have used it for bathtime bubbles, shampoo and body wash so it’s very versatile. I equally love the Childs Farm range. Their fragrance-free body wash is a lovely all rounder, as buying the super everything-free-ultra natural brands does get expensive when you’re bathing two every night! I like how affordable this was.
Oral B Junior Electric Toothbrush
My eldest daughter will also be receiving a toothbrush upgrade this Christmas from Ocado. The Oral B Junior Electric Toothbrush comes in purple which I already know means it will go down well. This has a useful timer on it and is similar enough to our adult toothbrushes that I know she’ll get the hang of it quickly watching and brushing her teeth at the same time as us.
Professional Dentists apparently suggest you continue to help your child with teeth brushing until age six or seven to make sure they have fully cleaned their teeth. But I’m hoping this will take some of the leg work out for us! I don’t know about other parents but getting my child to stand still for long enough to get a toothbrush around her mouth is nigh on impossible!
Halo Swaddle
Up until recently, my baby daughter was swaddled for all naps and at night. Something we did when our first was little too. But babies are crafty and despite numerous attempts with different products, she always managed to break free and inevitably woke herself up.
I LOVED using the Halo Sleep Sack this time around. It took the fuss out of swaddling and gave options for her arms to be in or out, hands to face. Plus, because of the design, it didn’t inhibit her hip development. This product is actually recognised by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute for peace of mind.
I also appreciated the zip at the bottom for easy nappy changes when she was in that half-asleep state! We have the Halo Cot so I like this brand and would certainly recommend the swaddle.
DryNites - Huggies
Although she will be upset in years to come for me mentioning this, my older daughter is still in nappies overnight currently (age 4). Having researched this thoroughly and speaking to a couple of experts, I understand this is a hormone related symptom. It is in fact very normal / common for children to still wet the bed overnight up until age seven with no concerns.
She has however asked me herself now if she can stop using nappies. Which is fine except we need to manage the inevitable accidents that are bound to occur. I’ve already bought waterproof duvet covers and sheets, one great hack from another parent was to have multiple layers of sheets and waterproofs so you can literally whip one layer off in the night and have a clean one underneath! Genius!
I wanted to transition her into ‘Nappy Pants’ and the Huggies DryNites have been ideal. Mainly because they are Frozen themed, so she was excited to wear them. But they also have the feel of pants whilst maintaining the absorbancy. This is still a work in progress but so far so good!
Overall, what I came to find having shopped and reviewed Ocado’s childrens range, is that the gifts and goodies available pleasantly surprised me. There was a perfect balance between necessity and fun. Even some of the gifts came with a side helping of developmental learning! Win-Win…

Cybex Orfeo - Travel Stroller
A lightweight stroller, that’s easy to manoeuvre and travel with is sometimes the initial go-to for those in the market for their first buggy - depending on where you live and how you get around day-to-day (walking, public transport or by car). I have many city-dwelling friends who opted for a travel pushchair from the get-go; and it’s worked brilliantly for them as their sole ride. For other parents - it’s a considered second purchase and for use alongside their other ‘main’ pushchair. For them, this style is more for holidays, days out on public transport or for weekends away when space in the boot of the car is at a minimum.
For those who travel regularly, either in the UK or abroad, having a pushchair for on-the-go is almost an inevitable step. This is where we’re at with our little one - with a plane trip to Europe on the cards, we needed a rethink. Last year we went on holiday with our main buggy, the Cybex Priam, which was necessary at the time (she was newborn so the spacious bassinet doubled up as a moses basket while we were there which was perfect). It did however mean a very large buggy bag came along with us, which my dutiful husband wrestled with both ends of oversize check in. Wanting to avoid the sweat and mildly stressful start to this next trip - the hunt was on for a plane / cabin friendly pushchair.
Cybex Orfeo Review
Hand Luggage Size Travel Buggy
It’s no secret we’re a fan of the Cybex brand - we love our Cybex Priam and super safe car seats for both of our girls. March 2023 saw the launch of the Cybex Orfeo - a mega lightweight travel and city stroller which folds up quickly and easily with one hand, into a hand luggage size (The Orfeo has a folded size of 53 cm x 48 cm x 15 cm) perfect for an overhead plane (or train) locker. (As usual, do check with your airline what their allowances are first!) We were keen to road test it - and it didn’t disappoint. We took it on an EasyJet flight and we went straight onto the plane, no questions asked. It slotted beautifully into the overhead! We also opened it up to get off the flight with my daughter and it fit (with room to spare) along the plane aisle.
Lightweight, foldable pushchair
First up was the weight - at 6.3kg it's marginally heavier than the Cybex Libelle, Cybexs alternative travel model - but since I prefer the rounded style of the handle (personal preference!) this makes up for the very minimal 0.3kg difference for me. It also still makes it one of the lightest travel buggies on the market and it’s so easy to fold (one handed) and tuck away, or carry over your shoulder with the in-built padded carry strap.
For your tiny passenger - it’s clearly a comfortable ride. The Orfeo is constructed to Cybexs usual high standard of material and spec - washable covers, a one pull adjustable harness, lovely comfy padding plus an adjustable leg rest and front wheel suspension mean a smooth journey, even over more undulating terrain. I also love that the canopy is so large with great coverage and UPF50+ so for holidays in the sun, your little one is protected - with shade and for if you get caught out in a downpour. A rain cover can also be bought separately.
A word of caution: if you’re planning long walks across very grassy, muddy or bumpy countryside then I’d have a rethink on this style of stroller, as although it will do the job, the wheels can get a little clogged and it’s not as easy to push - but in all honesty this really isn’t what it’s designed to do so the other plus points totally negate this.
Travel System
A massive bonus of the Cybex Orfeo is its compatibility with Cybex Car seats - with an adaptor these can be attached to the main frame and you have the option to seamlessly go from the car to the buggy without waking your baby. The Orfeo is suitable from Newborn as it does recline totally flat - which is also useful for holiday naps on the go when you don’t want to be confined to the hotel or villa! I also love how big the shopping basket is at the bottom - for such a compact buggy it’s great to still have this space, either for taking all the usual paraphernalia that you need for the day (changing bag, clothes, and snacks - lots of snacks!) or more importantly, for impromptu holiday purchases…

The Verdict…
What I really like about the Cybex Orfeo is that although its compact and lightweight, you still get the trademark Cybex quality feel of a large, more substantial buggy. It doesn’t scrimp on any design features and frankly, I’ll probably use it quite a bit on a more regular basis simply for the fact that it's so easy to lift in and out of the car on the school run. I’d most certainly recommend it as both a travel buggy but also as an investment for more regular use. At its current price point of just over £300 - it's at a reasonable mid-level in comparison to others on the market and it clearly has longevity for more than one child over a long period of time.
Stroller Review: The New Generation 2022 Cybex PRIAM
Buying a pushchair is a TOUGH purchase - seems simple…but once you delve into the minefield of the many (many) potential options (and somehow work out a way of comparing them all) what are the main things you need to consider? Pushing it around heavily pregnant on a smooth, carpeted shop floor doesn’t always give the best representation of how it will work for you day to day.
Some key initial points to consider would be:
Where you live - do you live in a city or rural location? Will you mostly be walking on pavements or lots of off road, undulated areas of ground where you’ll need some more control?
Do you mostly take public transportation and therefore, not as much need to fold away your pushchair? Or will you be in and out of the car and lifting it regularly?
Travel system - are you looking for a car seat that integrates with your stroller?
Shopping - will you need lots of space in the buggy for shopping or do you tend to do this in the car?
When I had my first daughter we were gifted a hand-me-down buggy from a family member, which was brilliant at the time because first time around, you have so many things to buy and it’s quite the investment. Most people invest first time around (In a way I wish I’d done this!) but in reverse, the benefit was I knew exactly what I didn’t want second time. The old one, although perfectly functional did not suit our lifestyle. It was very much an old fashioned city pushchair, it was cumbersome to manoeuvre and fold, get through doorways and was a real trial to get it in and out of the car.
I knew I needed something more manoeuvrable but style was also important (you use it everyday so why not make life that little bit more luxurious!) so having both gone on recommendation and having the subsequent opportunity to road test one - I was excited to try out the newest 2022 Cybex PRIAM model.
We’d always been Cybex fans - mainly due to the reputation of their car seats. It is the one thing I have never wanted to risk cheap or second hand - we are in the car constantly and taking long trips on country roads so having studiously reviewed many models of carseat we’d always come back to Cybex. Their safety levels are second to none and in my opinion there isn’t really anything on the market that comes close.
Style and comfort
The PRIAM 2022 has four different chassis options so there is something for everyone. I have the chrome chassis with the brown leather finish - you can also opt for rose gold and there is a black leather finish too. There are 21 (!) designs, fabrics and colours you can mix and match for the interchangeable elements so you can really change it up to suit your taste, there are some limited edition styles too which make it all the more special.
The PRIAM has four wheel suspension and is honestly such a pleasure to drive. It feels light and easy to navigate - we have many uneven pavements and country paths in our village which it glides over with ease. The wheels are also all removable for either washing or easy folding away.
We are fortunate enough to live in Suffolk very close to the beach and one of the main things that appealed about the Cybex PRIAM was the ‘One handed fold’ feature and its versatility over the sand and beach in two wheel mode. (NB: This is suitable for the seat not the carrycot attachment so it will be for later on for us) but it means versatility - you can easily pull it up stairs if there is no lift available or across the beach, ether sand or shingle. There are also extra feet attachments you can purchase (which look a bit like mini skis!) for moving over snow or sand if you’re heading off on holidays) which sit in place of the front wheels.
Overall the PRIAM has exquisite attention to detail and I’ve been really impressed by the high quality finish and luxe stitching. It feels like it has so much longevity. Little bonuses include the cup holder which clips to one side and is a great height for those (MUCH needed) morning coffees!
If you tend to walk to the shops, there is a shopping basket underneath the stroller which holds up to 5kg and has an extension area, so you can tuck this away (and also remove the whole thing if you don’t think you’ll use that often). You do need to remove the shopping basket before folding it away into the car.
Lux Carrycot, Cot Lite and Seat Attachments
The Lux Carrycot is suitable from birth up to 9kg (around 6months old) and is sold as an additional accessory and is optional. The main seat can be either front or rear facing and is also usable from birth - so you can utilise this alongside the Cot Lite attachment if you prefer. The latter means baby has to be in the harness so they are secure.
As Eira is still so little I like that she can lye in the main carrycot without the harness on as the harness does feel a little big for her at the moment. Once she grows - it’s going to be brilliant for her to transition into without me needing to take the whole carrycot out in the car each time we travel.
The Lux Carrycot doubles up as a safe sleep Moses basket, so we wanted this for when we went away later in the summer for Eira to sleep in both overnight and for naps. One less thing we have to sort out for when we are abroad.
Small but important things I’ve also found useful are the pocket in the foot of the carrycot which has been great for stashing my phone and keys for easy access. There is also a pocket at the back of the seat attachment for when we come to use that later on. The foam mattress within the lux carrycot and the Cot Lite is incredibly soft, thick and supportive (most importantly washable) and has bumpers which many other brands don’t offer, it feels so cosy and I know she will be cushioned if her head rests to one side.
There are also two optional mesh panels at the back of the Lux Carrycot which are fab for ventilation and also to check in on her when she’s asleep. They have been a GIFT in this hot weather!
The hoods on both the carrycot and seat options are UPF50+ and have ample coverage for all weathers - when it’s super sunny it almost comes all the way down for when Eira is asleep and this is also great if you get caught out in a rain shower (not happened to us yet!) - a rain cover comes with the PRIAM too so I have that tucked away in the shopping basket. It’s a lot less bulky to fold up than other rain covers I’ve used in the past.
Cloud ZI Carseat Integration
The newest PRIAM from Cybex is a 4 in 1 travel system, so combines the car seat element. This was another point on my wish list - last time around we opted for the Cybex Sirona which was perfect at the time - it turned 360 degrees which was helpful when getting my daughter in and our of the (then low) car easily.
The downside of course was when my first daughter was fast asleep and the car seat being fixed, meant I had a few sessions sitting on the drive waiting for her to wake up! The Cloud ZI carseat is fully compatible with the chassis and has its own Isofix base (which stays in the car) so on those days when you’re nipping in and out of the car, this car seat can be easily and simply clipped onto the buggy or back into your car safely. This has been a total game changer - Eira can stay fast asleep during the quick transition and with minimum fuss.
I also LOVE the fact that you can 'extend' the car seat so it lyes flatter with a quick button lift at the back. This means baby can extend their body when in the seat on the buggy attachment and stretch a little bit, feels reassuring that she's not always at the same angle or crunched up from a digestive and comfort point of view!
Folding, set up, weight and dimensions
The PRIAM took around 1 hour to set up when it first arrived. I’m the first to admit I’m not the best at construction (luckily my partner is) but we found the online videos incredibly informative and easy to follow (although it does come with written manuals too.) The stroller parts come in a few different boxes so my tip would be - take some time together to lay it all out, be organised and you’ll be flying (doubles up as pre-baby couple bonding and communication skills!!) Once set up, it’s super simple to fold, change elements around and make adjustments.
Weight wise and dimensions are as follows:

WEIGHT: 12.9 kg - for some this is on the heavier side but its not something I mind. It certainly doesn’t feel heavy to push and manoeuvre around due to great suspension. It fits in the boot of the car easily (we have a Honda CRV). If you have a much smaller boot space it might be more of a squeeze.
I love the fact the main handle is adjustable up to 108cm as my partner is very tall - so it’s much more comfortable for him to push.

The fabric covers are all machine washable at 30°, so no need to worry if the usual accidents and spillages occur. The material does lend itself to being wiped down too though so I can’t see the need for washing too regularly (hopefully!)
Travel
We are off on summer holidays soon and plan to take the PRIAM - it will be in the hold in a buggy bag due to size (I’d recommend this to protect it too) however we’ll be taking the Cloud ZI on the flight so intend to have her in this right up until boarding. All airlines are different so do check what the individual protocols are before you go.
We don’t have a cot when we arrive so I am also planning to use the Lux Carrycot unit to double up as a Moses basket overnight while she’s still tiny and for napping during the day.
Price
The PRIAM currently (July 2022) retails around £800-£1700 depending on which of the elements you include so it’s certainly on the premium side. For me this price IS reflective of the quality and style and the brand is so hard wearing, you could absolutely use this for more children in years to come so I’d consider it an investment. A carseat alone is often an additional cost and investment so factor in how much you’d spend on this too whilst in decision making stages!
In Summary…
I am absolutely delighted with the 2022 Cybex PRIAM - it has worked so well for us so far and has made the day to day that little easier and more stylish whilst we are in the newborn bubble! I’d give it a solid 10/10 - if you’re able to invest then it is most certainly worth it.
